Patterns and bitmap, and some art suggestions:

This tutorial assumes you understand Photoshop layers, feathering and blend modes.

Here's another way to use patterns -

1.Open a new image, press CTRL+A to select it, press CTRL+C to copy it to the clipboard (which you cannot see), then go to the "file" menu, choose "new", make sure that the new image has a 72 pixel/inch resolution and then press "OK". Now press CTRL+V to paste a copy of the image. The following is the image I used for this tutorial:

2. Using the copy of the image, do the following - Go to the "image" menu and choose "mode" and then "grayscale" and click "OK" when you are asked to "discard color information". Then go once again to the "image" menu and choose "bitmap". In the "bitmap" dialogue box choose "custom pattern" from the "method" dropdown, and make sure the "output" is set to "72". In the following image you will see the pattern I chose:

3. This is the result:

4. Now go to the "image" menu, choose "mode" and then "grayscale" (confirm size ratio as 1). Then go once again to the "image" menu, choose "mode" again, and then choose "RGB color".

5. Go to your original image, select it and copy it to the image with the bitmaped pattern. Then change the blending mode of the added layer to "linear burn".

6. Select the person in the image using the lasso tool with a feathering of at least 5 (or more):

7. Without deleting the selection, go to the layer below and then go to the "filter" menu => "blur" => "gaussian blur" and blur it to the maximum (250). Do this twice.

8. Go to the "image" menu => "adjustments" =>"brightness/contrast" - change the selection into maximum brightness and maximum contrast. Do this twice as well. This is what you will see in the layer palette:

9. And this is the final result:

Hope you liked it!
